This CME activity is to accompany the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Sixth Edition.

Objectives

  1. Accurately apply the new principles, methodology, and processes for evaluation of impairment for the internal medicine body systems, as indicated in the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Sixth Edition.  
  2. Demonstrate comprehension and ability to select the optimal diagnosis when more than one diagnosis can be used to describe a condition or illness. 
  3. Describe how to determine diagnosis-based impairments, make adjustments on the basis of the results of functional history, physical examination, and clinical studies.
  4. Evaluate individual variation and treatment effects in assessment of the internal medicine systems.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of impairment evaluators to assist in understanding how to calculate impairment based on the content presented in the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Sixth Edition. The activity must be used in conjunction with the AMA Guides, Sixth Edition, and therefore does not stand alone.

Statement of Need
The purpose of this activity is to provide a sampling of the appropriate use of the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Sixth Edition. It is intended that participants have read the AMA Guides, Sixth Edition, Chapters 1, 2, and chapters 4 through 12 to completely and effectively utilize this activity. 

Statement of Competency
This activity is designed to address the following ABMS/ACGME competencies: medical knowledge and patient care.

On completion of this workbook, some of the new methodology and principles in the internal medicine chapters of the AMA Guides, Sixth Edition, will be understood and the user will be able to assess body system organs impairment evluation cases according to the AMA Guides principles.

Accreditation Statement
The American Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation Statement
The American Medical Association designates this educational activity for a maximum of 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Receiving Your CME Credit
To claim AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, you must: 1) view the sample questions and answers, 2) successfully complete the quiz by answering 33 out of 42 questions correctly and 3) complete the evaluation.
