Health Care Resources and Physician Payment: Health Care Trends
The health care industry is undergoing great change. Demand for services is increasing, but most experts believe the physician work force will be insufficient to accommodate increased patient care demands. Physician payment is shifting away from fee-for-service and fixed salaries towards financial structures that reward improved quality, decreased cost of care and other factors. Increasing numbers of physicians are directly employed, while fewer are practicing in solo or small practices. This report by the AMA’s Council on Long Range Planning and Development analyzes data on the physician work force; work force diversity; physician satisfaction; non-physician provider supply and scope of practice; emerging physician payment models; employed physician payment; impacts of federal regulation on physician payment; and hospitals and other health care facilities to formulate predicted impacts of various trends for patients, physicians and policymakers.
