From Statewide to Bedside Transformation
This program will present a successful undertaking within the state of Michigan, which has resulted in improved patient safety among hospitals. The program will describe their efforts to improve upon the delivery of care and the outcomes of patients. In specific, the Michigan Keystone Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Project, which has had success in preventing ICU complications, will be discussed. The speaker will provide information on how the work that has been accomplished in Michigan has made an international impact on patient safety. Objectives

At the end of this activity, physicians should be able to:

  1. Describe a successful cause within a hospital that improved patient safety.   
  2. Explain the statewide initiatives based on Evidence Based Medicine used to ultimately improve the care of patients.
  3. Examine the Michigan Keystone Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Project and its successes through recognizing common goals and collaboration. 
  4. Discuss the impact the Michigan Keystone Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Project has made internationally on patient safety.
  5. Discuss the other Safety Initiative that the Keystone Center has launched to improve the safety of the care that is delivered to patients in the Operating Room, Emergency Department and Delivery Room

Target Audience
This activity is designed for medical staff leaders (Chief of Staffs, Medical Staff Presidents, Medical Directors and Medical Staff members), medical staff service professionals and medical staff legal counsel.  

Statement of Need
There is a need to provide education on the Michigan Keystone Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Project in order to help improve upon patient safety among hospitals by preventing ICU complications.

Statement of Competency
This activity is designed to address the following ABMS/ACGME competencies: patient care; practice-based learning and improvement; systems-based practice; and quality improvement.

The American Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation Statement
