Objectives

At the end of this activity, physicians should be able to:

  1. Summarize the categories of immigration available to physicians who plan to receive additional training or practice medicine in the U.S.   
  2. Apply the guidelines for obtaining a green card or for U.S. naturalization purposes;
  3. Determine the appropriate waiver options for obtaining graduate medical education; and 
  4. Acquire knowledge regarding labor certification or "PERM" status for the employment-based green card process.  

Target Audience
This activity is designed for international medical graduates and other physicians who are seeking permanent residence and employment in the U.S.  

Statement of Need
This activity will provide physicians with an overview of the foundations of immigration law, requirements in the U.S. as well as establish understanding of immigration and Visa categories.

This activity is designed to address the following ABMS/ACGME competencies: interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism.

The American Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation Statement
The American Medical Association designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
