Leadership and the AMA Code of Medical Ethics
The Preamble to the Principles of Medical Ethics states that, as a member of the profession, a physician must recognize responsibility to patients first and foremost, as we as to society, to other health professionals, and to self. The Code of Medical Ethics contains many provisions that provide opinions on matters of physician leadership. Physician leaders must deal with today’s complex and perplexing issues within the ethical framework of the profession. As a physician leader, are you prepared to deal with today’s complex and perplexing ethical issues? This program will explore the relationship and relevance of the Code of Medical Ethics to the responsibilities of physician leaders. The program will conclude with a discussion of case scenarios that will focus on key ethical tensions in health care. Objectives

At the end of this activity, physicians should be able to:

  1. Recognize the key professional and ethical responsibilities of physicians as leaders in health care.   
  2. Identify relevant guidance from the AMA Code of Medical Ethics
  3. Discuss how to balance multiple ethical responsibilities as leaders of health care organizations and leaders in collaborative patient care.  

Target Audience
This activity is designed for medical staff leaders (Chief of Staffs, Medical Staff Presidents, Medical Directors and Medical Staff members), medical staff service professionals and medical staff legal counsel. 

Statement of Need
There is a need to provide education on leadership in the AMA Code of Medical Ethics in order to understand the key professional and ethical responsibilities of physicians as leaders in health care. 

Statement of Competency
This activity is designed to address the ABMS/ACGME competency professionalism.

Accreditation Statement
The American Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation Statement
The American Medical Association designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
