Body Mass Index PI CME Pilot Activity Stage C: Learning from the evaluation of the PI CME effort
The goal of this Performance Improvement Continuing Medical Education (PI CME) activity is to improve the rates of body mass index (BMI) documentation for patients aged 18 years and older who were seen at least twice for any visits or who had at least one preventive care visit during the two-year measurement period.

This PI CME activity consists of three stages. You have arrived at Stage C, during which you will conduct a chart abstraction and calculate your post-intervention performance score. You are asked to provide feedback throughout the activity.

Stage C Instructions:

  1. Conduct chart abstraction and calculate post-intervention performance score
  2. Reflect on your performance score
  3. Complete Stage C evaluation

Stage C: Learning from the evaluation of the PI CME effort

Approved for 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians will be awarded 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ upon successful completion of Stage A and 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ upon successful completion of Stage B. An additional 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ will be awarded for successful completion, in sequence, of Stages A-C of this activity.

Objectives
At the end of this activity, physicians should be able to: 
  1. Conduct pre- and post-intervention performance measurement through manual or automated chart abstractions to understand their BMI documentation performance scores and to analyze components of gaps in performance.
  2. Select and implement BMI knowledge and system interventions into their practice to increase the rates of BMI documentation for their patient population.
  3. Monitor and evaluate the implemented knowledge and system interventions to determine what additional steps or changes are necessary to continue to increase practice BMI documentation rates.
Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of all practicing physicians who care for patients 18 years and older in an office-based/ambulatory care setting. 

Statement of Need
There is a need to improve rates of body mass indexing in order to meet the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy People 2020 Goal NWS-5.1 which aims to increase the proportion of primary care physicians who regularly measure the body mass index of their patients by 10%.

This activity is designed to address the following ABMS/ACGME competencies: practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, quality improvement

Accreditation Statement
The American Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation Statement
The American Medical Association designates this Performance Improvement Continuing Medical Education (PI CME) activity for a maximum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
